Gimp - GNU Image Manipulation ProgramAn Introduction
The history of the GimpPeter Mattis and Spencer Kimball were students in California trying to write a compiler in LISP, and they weren't having much luck. They quickly became sick of it, and they decided they needed to write something useful. They wanted to write it in C. Ideas went flying, and The Gimp was born....Time passes... Version 0.54 of The Gimp was released in February 1996, and it made a major impact as a professional quality, free image manipulation program. It was stable enough that people could use it for their daily work. There was one major drawback: It was built using the Motif toolkit. Version 0.60 was released in July of 1996. It was built using a new toolkit called the Gimp ToolKit, or GTK+. In February of 1997, 0.99 was released, and it had the ability to have plug-ins, and scripts. Version 1.0 was released in March of 1998. GTK+ 1.0 was also released during this time. The GNOME project adopted GTK+ as the toolkit for their project, and development started on the 1.1.x[0] series of GTK+. GTK+ 1.2 was released a few months ago, and Gimp 1.1.x is still in development as i am writing this.
[0] GTK+ and Gimp both use version numbering schemes identical to Linux.
