Gimp - Dialogs and Layers

All things Gimp

Dialogs

Brushes

From the brushes dialog box, you can select one of many different types of brushes. The brush that is currently selected will be the brush that is used in the pencil tool, the paint brush tool, the eraser, and the air brush tool.

Patterns

The patterns dialog box allows the user to select patterns that can be used with the bucket tool to fill an area with a pattern.

Tool options

The tool options dialog enables the user to set specific properties of a tool. The above example is for the bucket tool, and it allows the user to set how opaque the fill is, what the threshold for the fill is, and if the fill should be a color or a pattern.

Layers dialog

More on this below.

Layers

If there is one thing you understand from this presentation, this is it. Layers are the most critical thing to any image manipulation program, let alone The Gimp.

(This part really needs to be hands on. There is a demonstration here, and if i can include it in a web page, i will. If you're reading this and missed the talk, you're going to have to figure out layers by yourself or you can email me and ask me to explain them. I'm going to try to get a good explanation of them in here, but time does not permit right now. I apologize.)
