Gimp - GNU Image Manipulation ProgramAll things Gimp
The Gimp's Main window![]()
The rectangular and elliptical tools are very basic and straight forward: They
allow you to select things using a rectangle or ellipse. The freehand select tool(lasso) allows you to select any shape that you can draw. Fuzzy select(magic wand) allows you to select an area of adjacent pixels with similar colors. The Bezier selection tools allows you to make a selection using bezier curves. Intelligent Scissors - It tries to guess the edges you're trying to select. They sound neat, but i haven't been very successful with them.
The move tool allows you to move selections you made around the
image. The magnifying glass lets you zoom in on a part of an image and fine tune problematic areas. The crop tool allows you to remove the outer part of a picture that you don't want. The transform tool allows you to rotate, scale, shear, or create perspective on an image. The flip tool allows you to flip an image vertically or horizontally. The text tool allows you to enter text of any font you have installed. There are font packages on www.gimp.org.
The color picker is useful when you need to have two colors on opposite
sides of an image be exactly the same, or you want to use a color found
in a different image. The bucket fill tool fills an image or selection with a color. The gradient tool applies a gradient to the image. A gradient is a graded change in the intensity of a color. An example.
The pencil and paintbrush draw lines of the foreground color using the
selected brush. The eraser allows the user to erase part of a picture. The air brush tool allows the user to set the amount of pressure the brush uses, varying the intensity of the color. The clone tool allows you to paint with part of an image or a pattern instead of a solid color. The convolver tool allows the user to blur or sharpen an image.
